JERUSALEM, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Israeli defense electronics company Elbit Systems launched a new advanced missile warning system for fighter jets on Thursday.
In a statement, the company said the high-resolution missile warning system, named PAWS-2, is a field-proven, infrared airborne detection solution designed to identify and counter missile threats, without emitting any signals or radiation.
It can detect a wide range of threats, including surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles, and man-portable air-defense systems, regardless of seeker type, according to the statement.
The system is designed to protect fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters operating in complex, high-threat environments, it added.
At the heart of the system is a new-generation mid-wave infrared sensor with over 5 megapixels of resolution. It enables long-range detection, precise launch point geolocation, and early warning capabilities, allowing for timely countermeasure deployment.
The system's advanced image processing significantly reduces false alarm rates, even in cluttered environments, ensuring high threat detection accuracy.
The system can also detect nearby missile launches, distinguishing between direct threats and non-targeted launches.
Operating at a high sampling rate, the system offers hostile fire indication for detecting small arms bursts, RPGs, and anti-tank guided missiles, particularly useful for helicopters.
Elbit noted that the new system will be showcased at the Paris Air Show next week. ■
