JERUSALEM, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Israel said on Tuesday that its air defenses likely intercepted a ballistic missile fired from Yemen over central Israel, hours after its navy struck the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeidah.
Air raid sirens were triggered in dozens of cities and communities, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, several settlements in the occupied West Bank, and the southern city of Ashdod.
Footage shared on social media showed interceptor missiles streaking across the sky over Jerusalem. No injuries or damage were reported.
"A missile launched from Yemen was most likely intercepted," the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that additional interceptor missiles were launched to prevent falling shrapnel from causing harm.
The attempted missile strike came hours after Israel said it had carried out a naval missile attack on the Red Sea port of Hodeidah.
Israel has launched a series of strikes on Houthi-controlled targets since November 2023, when the Houthis began firing missiles and drones toward Ben Gurion Airport and targeting Israeli ports and commercial ships, citing solidarity with Palestinians amid the war in Gaza.
The Houthis have said they would halt the attacks if Israel ends its military offensive and blockade of Gaza. ■
