PHNOM PENH, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Thursday presided over the National and World Environment Day under the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution."
The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Hun Manet and other national leaders as well as foreign diplomats, relevant stakeholders and thousands of locals and students.
The event started with a performance educating people about the negative impact of plastic pollution, followed by speeches.
Speaking at the event, Sihamoni praised the government for paying high attention to safeguarding the environment and natural resources.
"Living in harmony with nature, by respecting it, avoiding its destruction, and using its resources sustainably, is a sacred responsibility that must be upheld and strengthened for the sake of future generations," he said.
Cambodia's natural wealth forms the lifeblood of the nation and is deeply woven into its identity, the monarch said, adding that the balance between humans and nature has long been a cornerstone of Cambodia's culture, traditions, and beliefs.
Sihamoni expressed his heartfelt thanks to people from all walks of life for having taken part in safeguarding the environment, conserving natural resources and biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development.
Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth said Cambodia launched a plastic-free campaign on Sept. 1, 2023. So far, more than 11 million people have voiced their support for the campaign.
He said the Southeast Asian nation is committed to achieving its goals of 60 percent forest cover and carbon neutrality by 2050. ■
