MADRID, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Four people, including an off-duty police officer, died in a high-speed collision robbery in the city of Malaga in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident happened at 05:30 local time (0430 GMT) after three of the victims used their vehicle as a battering ram to rob a pharmacy in Malaga (southern Spain). They then tried to escape a pursuit by the local police force by driving west along the AP-7 highway, which runs along the south coast of Spain.
The chase ended close to the town of Torremolinos with the escaping vehicle crashing head-on into a second vehicle that was being driven by an off-duty police officer, with the second vehicle catching fire.
Although the police officer, who had not been involved in the chase, was rescued from the car, he died soon after of his injuries, the Spanish government delegate in Malaga informed.
The bodies of the three robbers were extracted from their wrecked vehicle by the Fire Brigade, the Malaga City Hall explained, and after closing the highway to remove the wreckage, the road has now been reopened. ■
