KABUL, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Cases of Congo fever, an infectious disease transmitted from animals, have been on the rise in Afghanistan, with about 100 suspected cases reported over the past month, hospital sources said Monday.

"Compared to last year, cases have increased and continue to rise," the local media outlet Tolonews quoted local hospital doctor Faridullah Omari as saying on Monday.

The contagious disease, according to the doctor, has increased 10 to 15 percent compared to last year.

Citizens, especially butchers, are urged to wear gloves and masks during slaughter and follow safety measures as Eid al-Adha approaches. It is a major Muslim festival during which well-off families traditionally sacrifice animals such as sheep and cows.
