KABUL, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan interim government has released 317 prisoners, including women and children, on account of Eid al-Adha, the annual largest religious festival in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, local media outlet Tolo News reported Friday.

The prisoners were pardoned and set free in line with a decree issued by the supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, the state-owned media outlet said.

Eid al-Adha is reportedly observed on June 8, depending on moonlight. The Afghan interim government's supreme leader traditionally pardons or reduces the prison terms of detainees each year.

A total of 385 prisoners were given a reduced jail period on the occasion, according to the report.
