SOFIA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has asked the Constitutional Court to annul a decision by Parliament Speaker Nataliya Kiselova blocking debate on a proposed referendum over adopting the euro in 2026.
Radev submitted the proposal on May 12, but Kiselova rejected it the next day, citing constitutional and legal conflicts. Radev argues that only the National Assembly can decide on holding referendums and that the speaker overstepped her authority.
He also said the move undermines citizens' right to direct participation in governance. Bulgaria, a European Union member since 2007, is considering switching to the euro on Jan. 1, 2026. ■
