BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Brunei is aiming to become a renowned hub in biodiversity research covering land, aquatic and marine ecosystems, a senior Brunei official has said.
An expedition focusing on Brunei's mangrove forest in Selirong Island and the aquatic ecosystem in Pelong Rocks is held from May 19 to May 25, said Hajah Tutiaty Wahab, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
According to local daily Borneo Bulletin on Tuesday, the senior official said the expedition is a continuous effort by the ministry to explore, understand and protect the natural environment, collect scientific data, and obtain new findings from the research site.
Selirong Island is a mangrove paradise with a range of unique and exotic creatures, located about a 30-minute boat ride from Brunei's capital. Pelong Rocks is a popular scuba diving site with diverse coral life located off the Brunei beach. ■
