JERUSALEM, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed early Saturday in a fire that broke out in a three-story residential building in Deir al-Asad, an Arab village in northern Israel's Galilee region, medical authorities said.

Israel's national emergency service, Magen David Adom, confirmed that a young boy, Karam al-Asadi, was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother Ruba al-Asadi suffered critical injuries from smoke inhalation and later died at Galilee Medical Center (GMC) in Nahariya city.

Two other children, an eight-year-old girl who was critically injured and a three-year-old boy who sustained serious burn injuries, were hospitalized.

Eight additional individuals were treated for mild injuries at GMC, while six others suffering mild smoke inhalation, including a firefighter, were sent to Ziv Medical Center in Safed.

Israel's National Fire and Rescue Authority said six firefighting teams had worked to extinguish the blaze and rescue people trapped inside the building. A special police investigation team has been formed to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.
