ISLAMABAD, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan recorded a current account surplus of 12 million U.S. dollars in April, following a significant surplus of 1.2 billion dollars in March, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday.

On a year-on-year basis, the surplus marked a sharp decline of over 96 percent compared to 315 million dollars recorded in April 2024, the central bank's revised data showed.

Despite the monthly slowdown, the country's external account remains in surplus over the fiscal year to date. In the first 10 months of the Fiscal Year 2024-25 (July 2024 to April 2025), Pakistan posted a cumulative current account surplus of 1.88 billion dollars, a significant turnaround from a deficit of 1.34 billion dollars in the same period last year.

Economists attributed the narrowing surplus to a rise in imports and a drop in remittance inflows.
