WELLINGTON, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The New Zealand government will overhaul the country's science system with the creation of three new public research institutes by July 1, a senior official said on Wednesday.

These reforms unlock the power of science to grow the economy and build resilience, said Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti, adding the three new institutes will replace seven Crown Research Institutes and focus on national priorities.

The new institutes are New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science, targeting innovation in agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, biotechnology and manufacturing; New Zealand Institute for Earth Science, focusing on energy security, resource development, and climate resilience; and New Zealand Institute for Public Health and Forensic Science, enhancing disease response and public safety.

The minister said the institutes will be more commercially focused, with a mandate to turn research into real-world outcomes, boost start-ups, and create jobs.
