TIRANA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Socialist Party of Albania won the country's parliamentary elections, according to the latest results published Tuesday by the Central Election Commission.

With more than 99 percent of domestic votes and nearly 40 percent of overseas votes counted, the Socialist Party, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, garnered 52.24 percent of the vote, amounting to over 770,000 ballots. The main opposition, a coalition led by the Democratic Party, followed with 33.98 percent or more than 502,000 votes.

The results grant the Socialist Party 83 seats in the 140-member Albanian Parliament while the opposition coalition led by the Democratic Party will occupy 50 seats. Holding a clear majority, the Socialist Party is set to form a government for a fourth consecutive term.

Sunday's vote marked Albania's first parliamentary election since the country officially launched accession negotiations with the European Union in July 2022.
