HARARE, June 29 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and 26 others injured after a truck overturned in northern Zimbabwe Thursday night, police said on Saturday.
Police attributed the accident to recklessness on the part of the driver, who they said had fled the scene.
Paul Nyathi, national police spokesperson, said in a press statement that the truck was carrying 38 passengers when it veered off the road and overturned on the way from the town of Karoi in Mashonaland West Province to the town of Binga in Matabeleland North Province.
"As a result, some passengers were thrown out of the loading box while others were trapped under the load," he said.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists not to exceed the load capacity of their vehicles and not to mix goods with passengers when plying the country's roads. It is sad that some motorists are reckless and do not promote road safety on the country's roads," he added.
He warned that the police will ensure that the law takes its course against such drivers and vehicle owners. ■
