BAGHDAD, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi government said Friday that the country hopes for a new form of cooperation with the United Nations after ending the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
The government spokesman Basim al-Awadi told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the cooperation with the UNAMI, which was formed in 2003 after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, was usually carried out by UN sending teams of experts to advise the Iraqi government in various fields such as politics and social reconciliation.
He said that the UNAMI provided great services to the Iraqi people, tried to promote the country's political stability, and submitted important reports to the UN, based on which the latter issued important decisions to support successive Iraqi governments, the political process, and the Iraqi people.
Awadi said that Iraq still needs the UN's assistance in some fields, such as human rights, climate, environment, and others, but in a new way that does not include a permanent presence inside Iraq.
On May 12, a statement issued by the media office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani said that Iraq requested the termination of the UNAMI operations by the end of 2025. ■
