RIYADH, April 25 (Xinhua) -- A Saudi university announced a reef restoration initiative on Thursday, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in collaboration with NEOM City, has started the operation of the first nursery of the KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI), the SPA reported, adding a second facility is being developed, both located in the Red Sea.

Claiming the KCRI as the world's biggest coral restoration project, the university said the first nursery facility, which can breed around 40,000 corals annually, will change the face of global efforts on coral restoration.

With construction quickly progressing, the project is anticipated to reach completion by December 2025, according to the SPA report.
