YAOUNDE, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the end of Marburg virus disease outbreak in Equatorial Guinea.

No new cases were reported over the previous 42 days after the last patient was discharged from treatment, the WHO said in a statement on Thursday.

The outbreak, the first of its kind in the central African nation, was declared on Feb. 13.

According to the WHO, a total of 17 laboratory-confirmed cases and 12 deaths were recorded.

Marburg is in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola virus disease and is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, surfaces and materials.
