TEHRAN, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian judicial official said 9,000 cold weapons and firearms have been seized from "rioters" during the recent "violent riots" in Iran, the Mizan news agency of the Iranian judiciary reported Wednesday.

The weapons were used by "rioters" in different Iranian cities, Kazem Gharibabadi, the Iranian judiciary chief's deputy for international affairs and secretary of the country's High Council for Human Rights, was quoted as saying.

In the recent violence, "rioters" have killed 80 members of Iranian security forces, including members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, police officers and Basij paramilitary volunteers, he said, adding nearly 3,000 vehicles have been damaged by "rioters" in different cities.

More than 100 members of different "terrorist" groups have also been arrested, Gharibabadi noted.

However, this comes as some Western countries, in particular the United States, are still insisting that the "riots" were "peaceful protests," the official noted.

Protests have erupted in Iran after 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini died in a Tehran hospital on Sept. 16, 2022, a few days after her collapse at a police station. Iran has accused the United States and some other Western countries of "inciting riots and supporting terrorists" in the country. ■
