TEHRAN, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Iran's prosecutor general on Tuesday called for swapping prisoners with Azerbaijan within the framework of the signed agreements.
Mohammad Jafar Montazeri made the remarks in a meeting with his visiting Azerbaijani counterpart Kamran Aliyev in Tehran, reported the semi-official Mehr news agency.
He said that 234 Iranians are imprisoned in Azerbaijan, mostly over drug-related crimes, while 14 citizens of Azerbaijan are in Iranian prisons.
Montazeri said Iran, which has signed with Azerbaijan the agreements on judicial matters and exchanging prisoners, expects the two countries "would swap prisoners with each other within the framework of the pacts."
During a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Russia in January, Montazeri already called for swapping inmates at regular intervals with Azerbaijan. ■
