UNITED NATIONS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi ambassador to the United Nations, Rabab Fatima, has been appointed high representative for the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.
Fatima succeeds Courtenay Rattray of Jamaica, who has been appointed chef de cabinet for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Fatima brings to the position more than 30 years of experience in national and international civil service, said Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for Guterres.
Before her post as permanent representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York, Fatima served as Bangladesh's ambassador to Japan and director-general of the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh.
The high representative serves the most vulnerable UN member states, which face their own unique sets of challenges in achieving sustainable development and internationally agreed goals. ■
