BAGHDAD, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Four militants of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group were killed on Monday in airstrikes on an IS position in the Salahudin Province north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Iraqi military said.
Yahia Rasoul, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, said in a statement that Iraqi aircraft conducted four airstrikes on the position in the Makhoul mountain range in the northern part of the province, killing four militants.
The provinces, which the militants had previously, controlled have witnessed intense activities of the IS militants during the past months, despite repeated military operations to hunt them down.
The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the Iraqi forces defeated the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have since melted into urban centers, deserts and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. ■
