BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

QUANTUM SCIENCE

Chinese scientists have implemented twin-field quantum key distribution through an 833-km optical fiber, setting a new world record in the relevant field.

The experiment, led by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, is a solid step towards building reliable and efficient terrestrial quantum-secure networks over a scale of 1,000 km.

AUTISM STUDY

China has launched a large-scale study of fecal microbiota transplants for children with autism.

More than a dozen hospitals across the country are participating in the research. Preliminary results showed that about 60 percent of autistic children with gastrointestinal symptoms had their symptoms significantly improved following transplant, with better sleep quality, bowel movement, behavior and language. The study is currently recruiting volunteer families.

RESEARCH ON EYE MOVEMENT SLEEP

A China-led study published on Saturday in the journal Neuron reported a common circuit that regulates both innate fear and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, a stage when one's eyes move around rapidly in a range of directions, causing people to wake up briefly and periodically.

The research team found that a brain region capable of promoting the hormone release also regulates REM sleep. The study has opened the possibility of treating mental disorders by targeting the common regulatory circuit of sleep and fear.
